More then thirty years of debate, and the controversy remains as polarised as ever. This website (to be fair - whose maintainer is anti-nuclear) collects news about nuclear power in Europe, sorted by nuclear power plant, type of power plant, country etc.

By presenting different (media) angles on current nuclear issues, we hope to be able to cut out some spin, either pro or against, and to allow the reader to make up his or her own mind about today's pro's and con's of nuclear power.

Excessive Deposits of Material Containing Uranium In Scrubber

At a facility authorized to use low-enriched uranium to fabricate commercial nuclear fuel assemblies, excessive deposits of uranium-bearing material were found in the main scrubber and associated ventilation ductwork. The function of the scrubber is to remove gases and particulates from various process exhaust streams. During the most recent planned annual wet scrubber system cleanout, personnel noticed an abnormal amount of material buildup in the inlet transition region and associated ductwork (i.e. elbow). Over the course of the 2-day maintenance evolution approximately 197 kilograms of material were removed from these two sections. These sections are not a favorable geometry from a criticality perspective. Since the facility personnel were under the assumption that this material had a low uranium concentration, operators attempted to break up and wash away the material to facilitate its removal. The facility personnel did not sample the material to confirm the uranium concentration before conducting these activities. After the material was removed, grab samples of the material were taken and analyzed for uranium concentration. The grab sample results indicated that the uranium concentrations ranged from 34wt% – 55wt%, which corresponded to approximately 87 kilograms of uranium. As such, the criticality safety evaluation mass limit of 29 kilograms was exceeded by a factor of 3.

Loss of a device containing radioactive sources

On the 25th of August 2016 the lack of two density gauges containing a category 5 radioactive source each (Am-241 activities 240 MBq and 185 MBq) was discovered at a former barite mining facility. The gauges were not in use and were to be disposed of. The gauges were supposedly stolen but the exact date of the theft is not known due to the licensee’s lack of proper documentation. There is no evidence of possible exposure of individuals.

Overexposure to Radiographer

During the performance of industrial radiography, the licensee radiographer taped the radiography camera’s guide tube to a jig in preparation for an exposure shot. During the exposure shot, the guide tube fell and the radiographer re-taped it to the jig without first retracting the source back inside the camera. A re-enactment of the event demonstrated that the radiographer had placed his left hand on the camera's collimator and inserted his middle finger into its port hole.

A sealed radioactive Cs-137 source contaminated the premises of waste management company

Event Abstract:
A sealed radioactive Cs-137 source contaminated the premises of waste management company and also the neighboring rooms used by Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK). The event was found out on 7 March 2016.

The source, activity presently 360 MBq, had been used in a factory in Finland for level gauging and was delivered to waste management company as radioactive waste. When the gauge was received by the company, one of the staff tried to open the source shield in order to remove the actual cesium source for disposal. He did not have information or other indication that the source might not be intact. During the handling of the source contamination was released into the room where gauge was handled and also to adjacent rooms and air exhaust ventilation ducts.

Leakage from Piping Transferring RO-Concentrated Water to G-6 Tank Area

Around 19:20 on 20 April 2016, TEPCO found that RO-concentrated water was leaking from a heat-insulating material of transfer piping to G-6 tank area.
Extent of soil contaminated by leakage was about 30 cm × 30 cm.
The leak was stopped after shut down of transferring RO-concentrated water.
The place concerned is approximately 70 meters away from the nearest drainage, and the possibility of flowing into the ocean is ruled out, so there is no impact on the environment.
The maximum amount of leakage estimated by TEPCO is 2.7 litres.

Lithuania Submits Note To Belarusian Ambassador

Lithuanian MFA demands explanations regarding the accident at the construction of the Astravets NPP.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania called after the Belarusian Ambassador and submitted him a note on the possible incident at the Astravets NPP located 50 km away from Vilnius (ANPP).

Irregularities found in Areva-made components in French nuclear plants - ASN

Irregularities have been found in around 50 Areva-made components installed in French nuclear reactors, nuclear regulator ASN said on Tuesday.

It said that after the discovery of weak spots in the reactor vessel of the EPR reactor under construction in Flamanville, France last year, Areva began a review of manufacturing procedures at its Creusot steel forging plant.

In a statement, ASN said it had been informed by Areva that its investigation had found evidence of irregularities in about 400 components produced since 1965, of which some 50 are believed to be in use in French nuclear plants.

Leak from primary coolant system at Kakrapar Atomic Station-1

On March 11, 2016, Kakrapar-1 was operating at 220 MWe. At about 0852 hrs, primary containment (pump room) pressure high alarm appeared in control room. Both fast acting reactor shutdown systems and liquid poison injection system actuated automatically and brought the reactor to long term sub-critical state. Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) actuated as per design and provided cooling to the core.

As per the established procedure, plant emergency was declared at 0910 hrs.

Shutdown cooling loop was taken in service and primary coolant temperature was brought to 45 °C.

Germany demands France shut old nuclear plant near border

Germany demanded Friday that France close down its oldest nuclear plant, Fessenheim, near the German and Swiss borders -- just one of several ageing atomic plants that are unsettling France's neighbours.

"This power plant is very old, too old to still be in operation," said a spokesman for Environment and Nuclear Safety Minister Barbara Hendricks.

"That's why the environment minister demands its closure at the earliest possible date," he said, reiterating Berlin's earlier demands.

Radiographer Overexposure
