French strike cuts 5,000 MW of power capacity-union

PARIS, Nov 25 (Reuters) - French energy strikers cut a total of 4,000 megawatts of nuclear capacity and 1,000 MW of thermal capacity since Monday night, an official at the CGT union told Reuters on Tuesday.

French strikers are holding a 24-hour strike to protest against salaries and pensions.

"The strike has cut a total of 5,000 MW, this is a very positive outcome for us," the union official said, adding that strikers had been warned by EDF not to cut more capacity to avoid endangering the supply/demand balance.

Automatic shutdown of the reactor caused by spurious triggering of the containment spray system and jamming of a control cluster in the high position during this shutdown

On 11 June, while the reactor was operating, a spurious triggering of the containment spray system caused the primary pumps to cut out followed by a reactor emergency shutdown during which a control cluster remained jammed in the high position. In the event of an accident, the containment spray system sprays water into the reactor containment in order to reduce pressure and temperature and eliminate radioactive iodine.

Sticking of a control rod cluster during reactor scram

On 6 April 1996 a control rod jammed at the top of the core during a scram. The scram was due to an error in the realization of a periodic test of the rods. The incident had no impact on the fuel because the jamming of a control rod is anticipated by the design of the protection system.
Just after the incident, EDF performed control rod drop tests. No anomaly was detected.

INADVERTENT DILUTION OF THE PRIMARY FLUID DURING A COLD SHUTDOWN

During a cold shutdown, after reloading of the core introduction in the primary circuit of ten cubic meters of pure water from a safety injection accumulator that had been hydro tested, the operators immediately added boron to the primary circuit. (please see additional information on Magnuc.)
BASIS FOR RATING: Table A2 (addendum p. 9) with initiator possible. Within oprational limits and conditions: level 2.
DIFFICULTIES IN RATING: Difficulties of classification of an event which is not foreseen in the design between the categories "expected", "possible", "unlikely".

DEFECTIVE WELDS IN LOW PRESSURE SAFETY INJECTION SYSTEM

On Saturday 22 June, during a shutdown of reactor no. 2 for partial inspection and refueling, cracks were observed in the small-diameter branch-pipes in the two low-pressure safety injection system circuits.
The function of this circuit is in the event of an accident (such as a break in the reactor primary cooling system) to introduce borated water into the vessel in order to stop the nuclear reaction and to ensure that there is enough water to cool the core.

UNAVAILABILITY OF REACTOR LEVEL MEASUREMENT

On Friday, 24 May, while the reactor was shut down for a full inspection and fuel reloading, the pumps of the shutdown cooling system (RRA) showed signs of abnormal functioning. this anomaly became apparent during emptying of the primary circuit, which takes place before the vessel is opened. The facility's control team reacted immediately by interrupting the emptying operation and adding make-up water to the reactor vessel.
