Scientists monitoring a beach in Fife for radioactive hotspots say they have discovered seven contaminated areas.

Local people are worried Dalgety Bay may now be placed on a new register for radioactively contaminated land.

The Sellafield body parts inquiry has hit a major legal hitch after a doctor suggested his patients’ medical records should remain confidential – even though they are dead.

Michael Redfern QC is leading an inquiry into claims organs and tissue were secretly removed from workers at Sellafield and other nuclear plants without the knowledge of bereaved loved ones.

Malware claims UK suffers nuclear explosion

Sophos has discovered a widespread spam campaign that claims that a powerful explosion occurred at a nuclear power station located in the suburbs of London on the afternoon of the 9th September.

Samples intercepted by SophosLabs reveal that the emails claim to contain images in an attachment called victims.zip. In fact, clicking on the attachment will not open any pictures of the supposed explosion but will instead run a Trojan horse detected by Sophos as Troj/Agent-HQE. Once installed, the hackers can use the malware to spy on the victim's computer and steal information for financial gain.

UK and Italy to work together on nuclear energy

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain and Italy agreed on Wednesday to work together to develop nuclear energy to ease their reliance on expensive oil and gas.

"I'm pleased to announce our two countries will work together in the area of nuclear energy," Prime Minister Gordon Brown told a news conference with visiting Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

E.ON sizes up new nuclear at Oldbury

E.ON UK has entered into a transmission connection agreement with National Grid for up to 1600MWe of new capacity at Oldbury.

The Oldbury-on-Severn site named in the agreement is owned by National Grid and is the location of a substation. The site is adjacent to the Oldbury nuclear power station, which is owned by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and has two 225MWe Magnox units that are due to cease operation at the end of this year.

AN INVESTIGATION into radioactive contamination at Manchester University must be carried out with urgency and has to come up with answers, a top lawyer said today.

Liz Graham, who represents the widow of Dr Hugh Wagner, one of two lecturers whose deaths is now being linked to groundbreaking nuclear physics experiments there a century ago, says the emphasis has to be on a comprehensive fact-finding inquiry.

Scots "don't need new nuclear", minister insists

Scotland's energy minister Jim Mather insisted today that "our people don't want new nuclear power and we don't need it", as he revealed new figures on renewable energy.

Speaking at the Scottish Council for Development & Industry energy conference at Murrayfield Stadium, the minister said wind farms, hydro power projects and marine renewables will mean Scotland should "comfortably" surpass its renewable energy targets set for 2011.

Wylfa clear-up plan is revealed

DETAILED plans for how dangerous radioactive waste will be removed from Wylfa nuclear power station have been handed to health and safety officials.

An application for permission to decommission the Anglesey plant has been lodged with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

It brings a step closer the planned closure of the major island employer in 2010.
