Kozloduy Unit 6 incident poses no risk to people and energy system

The incident at Unit 6 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant poses no risk to people's health or to the energy system, Economy, Energy and Tourism Minister Traicho Traikov told journalists on Tuesday.Traikov ruled out radiation risk or any other risk to people's health at the power plant.

Škundrić: Serbia ready to take part in Belene project

Serbia is ready to consider participation in building of another Bulgarian NPP "Belene", but still awaits concrete offer, in writing, to be able to take concrete decision, announced today Serbian Ministry for Energy Petar Škundrić in interview for Bulgarian National Radio.

"Consent is given but we still didn't negotiated level of involvement in that project. I am expecting in near future offer of Bulgarian Government to enable us to take a decision" explained Mr Škundrić.

CEZ May Delay Temelin Construction for Years on Demand, Hospodarske Says

CEZ AS, the Czech Republic’s largest power producer, will delay the construction of two additional reactors at its Temelin nuclear power plant, Hospodarske Noviny reports, citing Industry and Trade Minister Martin Kocourek.

The construction could be delayed by as much as several years, the newspaper said, citing an unidentified person from the company. The main reason is uncertain demand for electricity after 2020, according to the report.

Enel delays decision on involvement in nuclear project company

Italian utilities company Enel will decide on its involvement in the nuclear project company, set up by the Romanian state with major European partners to complete the 3rd and the 4th reactors of Cernavoda nuclear plant, when the reforms in the power generation sector become predictable. The decision depends critically on the alteration of the market regulations besides the setting up of the two state power companies in the generation sector, Enel officials told Bloomberg agency quoted by local media.

France's EDF designs reactor to challenge Areva: report

PARIS - French electricity generator EDF is working on two new nuclear reactor designs of its own which could rival those made by Areva, the world's biggest atomic energy company, the Expansion magazine said.

In a report to appear Wednesday, Expansion said EDF is "looking at its own series of reactors," power rated at 1,000 and 1,500 Megawatts, which if finalised could be competition for Areva's third generation European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) and its Atmea design.

MEPs vote to cut 2011 spending on ITER nuclear fusion project

Members of the European Parliament's budget committee on Monday night voted to cut planned funding for the ITER experimental nuclear fusion project in 2011, the Green group in the European Parliament said Tuesday. The budget committee adopted an amendment to cut the ITER budget by Eur 57 million to Eur304.76 million ($419.77 million) in 2011 in a revision to the EU's research budget.

German utilities spook investors with nuclear gamble

FRANKFURT, Oct. 4 (Reuters) - German utilities' gamble of sacrificing near-term profits in exchange for extending the lifespans of their 17 nuclear plants is pressuring shares and may misfire if the political situation changes.

Last month, the government agreed with the four operators of Germany's nuclear power plants to extend the plants' life by 12 years on average in exchange for at least 31 billions euros ($42.45 billion) of payments.

Romania Wants to Export Electricity to Bulgaria

Romania could export more electricity to Bulgaria, according to Adrian Baiscusi, general manager of Romanian power grid operator Transelectrica (TEL).

Baicusi has stated, as cited by Act Media, that as a result of Turkey joining the European electricity network (UCTE) in September, Romania should have opportunities to export
energy to the south.

Search for German waste dump goes on

The German government is to investigate whether a temporary nuclear waste storage site in the town of Gorleben could be turned into a permanent facility. The review, due to start in October, may be overseen by private bodies.
