BRATISLAVA, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Slovakia will open a tender this year to expand the Jaslovske Bohunice nuclear power plant, seeking to boost power capacity to meet demands of its growing economy, Economy Minister Lubomir Jahnatek said on Monday.
"We expect that the tender will be called this year," Jahnatek told reporters after meeting his Czech counterpart Martin Riman.
The capture of nuclear materials in Slovakia last week raises security questions about borderless travel.

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) — Two Hungarians and a Ukrainian arrested in an attempted sale of uranium were peddling material believed to be from the former Soviet Union, and it was enriched enough to be used in a radiological "dirty bomb," police said Thursday.
The three, who were arrested Wednesday in eastern Slovakia and Hungary, were trying to sell about a pound of uranium in powder form, said First Police Vice President Michal Kopcik.

The European Commission (EC) is expected to present its statement concerning safety of the completion works of the third and fourth units of the Nuclear Power Plant in Mochovce (EMO) in a few months. The European Commissioner for Energy Andris Piebalgs stated at a press conference at the European Nuclear Energy Forum (ENEF) in Bratislava on Monday that the EC is currently evaluating the EMO completion works. “However, eventually the construction will be approved by the Slovak Nuclear Supervision Office,” added Mr. Piebalgs. According to him, the EC will only issue a statement determining whether the completion is safe or not.
MOSCOW, November 26 (RIA Novosti) - Atomstroyexport, Russia's nuclear power equipment and service export monopoly, has begun talks on building a nuclear power plant in Belarus, the company's first vice president said on Monday.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced in October that his country would build a nuclear plant to ensure energy security.
PRAGUE - (Dow Jones)- Slovakia's leading electricity company Slovenske Elektrarne, 66%-owned by Italy's Enel SPA, said on its Web site Tuesday it closed a EUR 800 million financing deal with a consortium of banks, the largest corporate financing deal in Slovakia to date.
Slovenske Elektrarne concluded a revolving credit line for seven years to finance its investments, which will reach 110 billion koruna ($4.65 billion) by 2013, the company said.
BRATISLAVA, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Slovakia will probably launch a tender to build a new 1,200 megawatt nuclear plant in 2009 and has been approached by more than six potential investors, Economy Minister Lubomir Jahnatek said on Wednesday.
The country, which needs to meet rising demand for power in the fast growing economy and replace decommissioned stations, plans to build the plant consisting of two units at the existing Jaslovske Bohunice nuclear site by 2025, he said.
PRAGUE. JUNE 25. INTERFAX CENTRAL EUROPE - French state-owned electricity giant Electricite de France (EDF) is interested in building a new nuclear plant in Slovakia, a company vice president said Monday.
"We would like to participate in developing the electricity sector in Slovakia," EDF's international unit vice president of Marc Boudier said, as cited by Slovak news agency SITA. "We want to use our know-how and tools to develop new production capacities and so [help] ensure Slovakia's self-sufficiency."

In Slovakia, plans by Canadian company Tournigan Gold Corporation to open a uranium mine near the Eastern city of Kosice have met with strong opposition from locals. Almost 16,000 people signed a petition requiring the Ministry of Environment not to authorize the project.
