Reactors at the Dukovany nuclear power plant attracted almost 29,000 visitors in 2007.

Nuclear power is in vogue. Not only have soaring energy prices and rising energy demand put atomic power on the public agenda, but it seems they have boosted the curiosity of tourists, as well.

'Nuclear' TV hackers face trial

A group of Czech artists who inserted a nuclear explosion into a national weather broadcast have been told by a prosecutor they could be sent to jail.

The six hackers are accused of tampering with equipment during a live panoramic shot of mountains last June.

Uranium Could Have Made Dirty Bomb

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) — Two Hungarians and a Ukrainian arrested in an attempted sale of uranium were peddling material believed to be from the former Soviet Union, and it was enriched enough to be used in a radiological "dirty bomb," police said Thursday.

The three, who were arrested Wednesday in eastern Slovakia and Hungary, were trying to sell about a pound of uranium in powder form, said First Police Vice President Michal Kopcik.

Czech President Klaus pleading for nuclear energy

Prague, ČTK 19:22 - 03.12.2007 - The dream of endless lowering of energy consumption is nonsense and this should be said aloud, Czech President Vaclav Klaus said at the reopening of the VR-1 training reactor at Czech Technical University (CVUT) today.

"I cannot imagine the development of this country without nuclear energy," Klaus said.

Atomstroyexport in talks to build nuclear plant in Belarus

MOSCOW, November 26 (RIA Novosti) - Atomstroyexport, Russia's nuclear power equipment and service export monopoly, has begun talks on building a nuclear power plant in Belarus, the company's first vice president said on Monday.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced in October that his country would build a nuclear plant to ensure energy security.

Company's plans to bring in Italian nuclear waste to US raises fears

CHARLESTON, South Carolina: Environmentalists and some federal lawmakers voiced concerns over the planned shipment to the United States of radioactive nuclear waste from Italy, questioning the volume of waste being brought in and whether it exceeds federal safety standards.

EnergySolutions wants to ship about 200,000 cubic feet (5,664 cubic meters) of the radioactive waste into the United States, process it in Tennessee before burying it at a site in Clive, Utah, where the company is based.

Klaus's holiday speech touched on relations with the US and Russia.

Prague, Oct 28 (CTK) - Czech politicians should be friendly to Austria but resolutely explain that the Czech Republic needs nuclear energy, President Vaclav Klaus said today in his speech on the October 28 national holiday that marks the anniversary of Czechoslovakia's birth 89 years ago.
