Nuclear reactors will cost twice estimate, says E.ON chief

The Government has vastly underestimated the cost of building a new generation of nuclear power plants, according to the head of the world's largest power company.

Wulf Bernotat, chairman and chief executive of E.ON, the German energy giant that owns Powergen, has told The Times that the cost per plant could be as high as €6 billion (£4.8 billion) - nearly double the Government's latest £2.8 billion estimate.

British Energy bidding war hopes recede

Hopes of a bidding war for British Energy were dealt a blow yesterday after it became clear that Vattenfall, Suez and Eon were not planning to bid for the UK nuclear group.

This leaves RWE of Germany and France's EDF as the most likely bidders for the UK government's 35 per cent stake in British Energy before the deadline of Friday, May 9. Both companies - which have power generation operations in the UK - declined to comment.

Russia wants to sign nuclear fuel contract with Ukraine in 2008

MOSCOW, April 28 (RIA Novosti) - Russia plans to complete talks on a new contract for nuclear fuel supplies to Ukraine for 2010-2025 later this year, Russia's deputy nuclear chief said on Monday.

Russia will supply all nuclear fuel for Ukrainian power plants until the end of 2010.

Russia plans nuclear plant for Kaliningrad exclave

VILNIUS - An announcement by Moscow that it intended to build two nuclear reactors in the Kaliningrad region triggered dismay and alarm in neighboring Lithuania, which is struggling to get plans for its own atomic power plant off the ground.

Sergey Kiriyenko, head of the Rosatom nuclear energy agency, announced on April 16 that Russia would build two reactors with a combined 2,300 megawatts output in the region of Kaliningrad. He signed a framework agreement together with Kaliningrad Governor Georgy Boos.

Utah governor opposes imports of Italian nuclear waste

SALT LAKE CITY: Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman says he is reversing his stance and will block the shipment of Italian nuclear waste to a desert dump site in his state.

Huntsman initially said the federal government should decide where to dispose such foreign waste.

Suddenly, A Rush for Nuclear Applications

The utility Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) plans to submit its application to build a sixth nuclear reactor this spring. The rapid timing came as a surprise to the rival Fennovoima consortium, which is not planning to hand in its application until next year. The state says it wants any groups interested in building a new nuclear unit to apply for a permit within the next few months.

Minister of Economic Affairs Mauri Pekkarinen says he wants all applications on his desk at the same time, and soon. He adds that he does not intend to wait for many months after receiving the first application -- which could be as soon as May.

RWE mulls withdrawal from Belene nuclear power plant -Die Welt

German energy giant RWE is considering withdrawal from the race to buy 49 per cent in the company that will build Bulgaria´s second nuclear power plant at Belene, German newspaper Die Welt reported on April 20.

The newspaper quoted company sources as saying on April 18 that RWE would re-align the investments earmarked for buying the minority stake in the nuclear power plant to the acquisition of British Energy.

MOSCOW: Russia closed down a plutonium producing reactor Sunday, marking a major milestone in U.S. nuclear nonproliferation efforts, a Russian news agency reported.

The U.S. and Russia have been working for years on arrangements to close Russia's three remaining weapons-grade plutonium producing reactors.
