Finland should grant nuclear power permits to all three -Lilius

Mikael Lilius, the chief executive of Finnish utility Fortum, was quoted as saying by Energia, an industry publication, on Monday that the Finland should grant a permit to build a nuclear power station to all three hopefuls.

"I cannot understand why one should start regulating who can build and who cannot when we have three willing builders," Mr Lilius told Energia, referring to Fennovoima, Fortum and Teollisuuden Voima.

Finnish builders' union postpones nuclear site strike

The Finnish Construction Trade Union on Monday postponed the start of a strike affecting Teollisuuden Voima's Olkiluoto nuclear power station site by a week to 17 September.

The union added that Rimec, a Cyprus-registered subcontractor at the site, had until 16 September to come up with an explanation of suspected wage and occupational healthcare irregularities.

Scots "don't need new nuclear", minister insists

Scotland's energy minister Jim Mather insisted today that "our people don't want new nuclear power and we don't need it", as he revealed new figures on renewable energy.

Speaking at the Scottish Council for Development & Industry energy conference at Murrayfield Stadium, the minister said wind farms, hydro power projects and marine renewables will mean Scotland should "comfortably" surpass its renewable energy targets set for 2011.

Environmentalists protest again Belene nuclear power plant

On September 9 Bulgarian and international environmental organisations, including the local coalition BeleNE (No to Belene nuclear power plant) and Greenpeace, sent a letter to the European Union (EU) Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes asking her to investigate the tender procedures for subcontractors in the construction of Bulgaria’s Belene nuclear power plant.

New incident at French nuclear plant

PARIS, Sept 8 (Reuters) - A security incident has occurred at a French nuclear site already under scrutiny because of a series of safety scares over the summer, France's ASN nuclear safety authority said on Monday.

ASN said two fuel units became snagged in a reactor at Tricastin in southern France on Monday morning when site workers were attempting to remove them during maintenance work.

Wylfa clear-up plan is revealed

DETAILED plans for how dangerous radioactive waste will be removed from Wylfa nuclear power station have been handed to health and safety officials.

An application for permission to decommission the Anglesey plant has been lodged with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

It brings a step closer the planned closure of the major island employer in 2010.

RWE Is Among Bidders for Turkish Nuclear License, Dunya Says

Sept. 5 (Bloomberg) -- RWE AG, Germany's second- biggest utility, is among 12 bidders which received tender documents to build Turkey's first nuclear-power station, the Dunya newspaper said.

RWE got the tender documents this week, Dunya said citing officials at the energy ministry. Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., Japan's Itochu Corp. and Turkish companies Haci Omer Sabanci Holding AS and Alarko Holding As are also among the companies which received the tender documents, the newspaper reported.

Lack of power and water cap Namibian uranium output

LONDON (Reuters) - A shortage of energy and water will cap future uranium mine expansion in Namibia, but the country hopes to ease the bottlenecks through desalination and a new coal-fired power plant, an industry body said on Wednesday.

The government has issued some 50 exclusive prospecting licenses for more uranium mining firms, but output of uranium is dependent on the availability of water.

EDF says Tricastin 2 reactor stopped for refuelling

PARIS, Sept 4 (Reuters) - EDF said on Thursday it had stopped its 900-megawatts nuclear reactor 2 at its Tricastin plant in southeast France for refuelling on Aug. 30.

The reactor 4 at the 3,600-MW plant was halted on July 12 for maintenance.

Utilities turn to US, Europe for uranium enrichment

LONDON, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Uranium enrichment companies in the United States and Europe have seen an increase in customer interest after the recent conflict involving Russia and Georgia, industry sources said on Thursday.

Nuclear reactors are dependent on reliable supplies of fuel, made from uranium ore that has been converted into a gas which in turn is enriched into nuclear fuel.
