EBRD contributes to safety of Ukraine’s nuclear power stations

The FINANCIAL -- The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has decided to participate in a comprehensive safety upgrade programme for the operating nuclear power units of Ukraine with a €300 million loan.

The programme will bring the fleet of Ukraine ’s nuclear power plants in line with international safety standards, including those of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Austria should exit Euratom Treaty: Green party

(VIENNA) - The Austrian Green party called Tuesday for Austria to quit the European Atomic Energy Community (Euroatom or EAEC), saying public money paid to the body could be better used elsewhere.

Austria, which is constitutionally opposed to nuclear energy, "must exit the Euroatom Treaty," Green party spokeswoman Eva Glawischnig said.

EDF faces challenge over nuclear technology

EDF, the French utility, could face a legal challenge over the technology it has decided to use in building Britain’s latest generation of power stations.

EDF announced last May that it planned to employ Areva, the French nuclear energy group, but its decision, which was made without giving rival reactor manufacturers an opportunity to bid for the contract, could be illegal under European law, according to Ros Kellaway, partner and head of EU competition law in Eversheds.

EU pushes closure of Armenian NPP for security and safety reasons

NEW YORK - Euroatom is ready to provide Armenia with a EUR 200m preferential loan to close down the Armenian nuclear power plant, said Gunnar Wiegand, of the European Commission’s on department for Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia told reporters in Yerevan Thursday, Eurasia.org reported.
