German coalition renews dispute over nuclear power as election comes into view

BERLIN: Germany's research minister said in comments published Sunday that the nation should stop phasing out its nuclear power stations and even consider one day building new ones — fueling a dispute in the governing coalition that could be an issue in next year's election.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's left-right "grand coalition" government has stuck with its center-left predecessor's decision to phase out Germany's 17 nuclear power plants by 2021 — but the plan has caused repeated political friction.

France to build new generation nuke plant

LE CREUSOT, July 3: President Nicolas Sarkozy announced on Thursday that France will build a second third-generation EPR nuclear plant, arguing that nuclear power was France’s best answer to soaring energy prices.

“We are going to build a new EPR nuclear reactor, separate from the one in Flamanville,” Sarkozy said in a speech on energy policy as he visited an ArcelorMittal steel factory in central France.

Taxpayers to back Sellafield £7bn clean-up

Taxpayers are being forced to indemnify the winner of the £7.5bn contract to decommission the highly toxic Sellafield nuclear site in Cumbria against an accident because the bidders are based overseas. The preferred consortium will be announced on Friday.

Four consortia are vying for the contract, which could be worth £20bn over its lifetime, including US engineering giants Fluor, Bechtel, Washington Group and CH2M Hill, as well as French nuclear power group Areva and the Japanese firm Toshiba. UK companies Serco and Amec are also members of overseas-led consortia.

Netherlands bans Iranians from studying nuclear science

BRUSSELS, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The Dutch government said Friday that Iranian students are banned from approaching locations or being enrolled in study programs in the Netherlands where they might gain access to nuclear science, Radio Netherlands reported Friday.

The government specified five locations and nine academic courses which will even be out of bounds to Iranians who hold a Dutch passport. They include the Borssele nuclear power plant in southwestern Netherlands and a test reactor at Delft University of Technology.

Poweo says eyeing role in new French nuclear plants

PARIS, July 4 (Reuters) - French alternative power supplier Poweo on Friday said it was interested in taking part in the construction of new-generation European Pressurised nuclear Reactors (EPR) in France.

"Poweo has long expressed its interest in co-investing in an EPR, and today confirms its interest in being associated either to the Flamanville site under construction, or to the new project along with other energy players involved," the company said in a statement.

The 20th edition of the international bicycle procession ‘Ecotopia' starts from Bulgaria on July 5 and will end in Turkey 5 weeks later, the organizers from 'Veloevolutsia' (Bikevolution) Association ‘, part of EYFA (European Youth For Action).
