Electrabel disputes Belgium's nuclear tax bill

AMSTERDAM, Oct 6 (Reuters) - Belgium's proposals to charge the country's nuclear power generators a one-off tax of 250 million euros ($339.8 million) are in conflict with previous agreements, Belgian energy company Electrabel said.

The Belgian cabinet is set to present a bill to parliament to levy the charge against all nuclear players in the country for 2008 in return for keeping five out of seven of the country's nuclear reactors open.

Belgian radioactive leak worse than initially thought

BRUSSELS (AFP) — Fresh tests carried out near a Belgian medical laboratory showed that a leak of radioactive iodine last weekend was worse than had initially been thought, authorities said late Thursday.

Samples of grass taken next to the National Institute for Radioactive Elements near the southern city of Charleroi had shown higher levels of radioactive iodine than the first tests, an interior ministry crisis group said here.

Britain holds £160bn stockpile of nuclear fuel

Britain has a stockpile of plutonium and uranium that, if converted to fuel, could be worth nearly £160 billion and power three nuclear reactors for 60 years, scientists say.

The future of the stockpile - largely left over from burning fuel - will be decided by ministers over the next year, The Times has learnt. Its value is estimated as the equivalent of 2.6 billion barrels of oil.

Centrica takes control of Belgium’s SPE

Centrica on Wednesday fulfilled its long-standing vow to take control of Belgian power company SPE, frustrating Gaz de France’s plans to sell its stake to EDF.

The UK energy group exercised a pre-emption right over GDF’s 25.5 per cent stake in SPE for €515m (£407m) in cash, with another €105m later. The deal is expected to be completed in September.

SPE buys Belgian nuclear capacity from Electrabel

BRUSSELS, March 12 (Reuters) - Belgian electricity company SPE said on Wednesday it had bought 635 megawatts of nuclear energy capacity from Suez's Electrabel, boosting its share of Belgium's nuclear market to some 15 percent.

SPE, partly owned by Gaz de France and Britain's Centrica, said it was a three-part deal.

136 jours sans gouvernement. Un accord est quasi ficelé sur le développement durable. Le nucléaire prolongé, l'Orange bleue s'engagerait ensuite dans un plan alternatif aux énergies fossiles.

Cela semble acquis : la possible coalition Orange bleue optera pour un superministère du Développement durable. Regroupant les matières énergétiques, environnementales et de transports, ce ministère vert serait la pierre angulaire des politiques de lutte contre le réchauffement climatique.

Energiebedrijf Delta wil in België centrales bouwen. De ruimte in het Sloe wil het benutten voor een tweede kerncentrale. "Met de Sloecentrale zijn we er niet."
De palen voor de Sloecentrale zijn koud de grond in of Delta kijkt al weer verder. "We moeten wel, om de concurrentie het hoofd te bieden." Voor de duidelijkheid trekt Dick van der Klaauw, directeur energie, een vergelijking met koeriersbedrijven. "Wij zijn een koerier met vier auto's en concurreren met bedrijven met drieduizend wagens. Valt er bij ons een auto uit, dan merken we dat direct."

Negotiators for next Belgian government agree to extend lifetime of several nuclear plants

BRUSSELS, Belgium: Negotiators trying to form a coalition government agreed Thursday extend the lives of some of Belgium's seven nuclear power reactors, citing uncertain future energy supplies.

The outgoing government of Liberals and Socialists agreed in 2003 to close all nuclear plants between 2014 and 2025.

But negotiators working to create Christian Democratic-Liberal government said they would back off that pledge.
