Rosatom rejects rumors of Lithuania radioactive leak

MOSCOW, May 24 (RIA Novosti) - Russian nuclear power agency Rosatom dismissed on Saturday rumors circulating in the country's Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad of a radioactive leak from a plant in neighboring Lithuania.

Rosatom spokesman Sergei Novikov said several journalists had contacted him on Friday asking about an alleged accident at Lithuania's nuclear plant.

Panic gripped many in the city Wednesday after rumors spread that a serious accident had happened at the Leningrad Nuclear Power Station (LAES) in Sosnovy Bor, a town 70 kilometers west of St. Petersburg.

The power station operates four Chernobyl-type reactors and has a history of minor accidents.

22 May 2008 Zagreb - Croatia’s plans to construct a €2 billion thousand-megawatt nuclear plant will only increase the country’s foreign debt, a daily warns.

Croatia is a debt-ridden country and taking out new loans for a nuclear power plant could bring more trouble, warns Zagreb daily Vecernji list.

Italy to Begin Building Nuclear Plant Within 5 Years

May 22 (Bloomberg) -- Italy will start building a nuclear power plant by the end of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's five-year term, more than two decades after abandoning the fuel source, Industry Minister Claudio Scajola said.

``Only nuclear plants allow the production of clean energy, safely, at low cost, on a large scale, and without damaging the environment,'' Scajola said during the annual assembly of employers' group Confindustria in Rome. ``By the end of this legislature we will take the first step in construction of a new generation of nuclear plants.''

Areva denies report it may have to pay TVO 2.2 bln eur for nuclear plant delays

PARIS (Thomson Financial) - Nuclear power plant maker Areva denied a report on the website of the French business magazine Capital that it may be obliged to pay 2.2 billion euros in penalties to Finnish power generator TVO for delays in the construction of the Olkiluoto 3 nuclear plant.

Man held after Swedish nuclear plant gets bomb threat

STOCKHOLM, May 21 (Reuters) - Swedish state energy firm Vattenfall said the country's Oskarshamn nuclear plant had received a bomb threat on Wednesday, and a source at the site said a building was sealed off after an employee was found carrying explosives.

Police said they were questioning a suspect at the Oskarshamn plant, south of Stockholm on the Baltic coast, but could not immediately confirm he was an employee of the facility.

Papers on nuclear smuggling ring shredded

The government ordered the destruction of documents on an alleged international nuclear smuggling network involving three Swiss engineers, it has been confirmed.

The head of a parliamentary control committee said the material was shredded last November.

Dutch to weigh up benefits of nuclear power

The Netherlands has added its name to the growing list of European countries that might build nuclear power stations to help meet their greenhouse gas targets.

Maria van der Hoeven, Dutch economics minister, said she could not envisage a nuclear-free future if the government was to meet its CO 2 targets.

Nuclear waste: Huntsman slams door on Italian import

Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. has wisely waded into the fray, and from all indications, dealt a knock-out blow to EnergySolutions' plan to import low-level radioactive waste from Italy's nuclear power industry.

Huntsman said he will instruct his representative on the board of the Northwest Interstate Compact on Low-level Radioactive Waste, state Department of Environmental Quality Deputy Director Bill Sinclair, to vote against the plan on May 8. And Sinclair says he will comply with the governor's request.
