Ukraine's nuclear authorities are playing with fire

MOSCOW. (RIA Novosti commentator Tatyana Sinitsyna) - Ukrainian politicians have made one more move aimed at easing their dependence on Russia's nuclear fuel supplies.

In late March, Ukraine's nuclear power company Energoatom signed a five-year contract with U.S.-based Westinghouse Electric Company to provide nuclear fuel to three Ukrainian reactors at the Yuzhnoukrainsky nuclear power plant in 2011-2015.

Latvia to pay Russia $700,000 for removal of spent nuclear fuel

RIGA, April 1 (RIA Novosti) - Latvia's government made a decision on Tuesday to pay $700,000 to Russia for the removal and burial of spent nuclear fuel from the dismantled Salaspils research reactor.

Germany's Glos calls for emission target exemption for nuclear phase-out -report

FRANKFURT (Thomson Financial) - Germany's economy minister Michael Glos plans to call on the European Union to loosen the country's emission targets, taking account of its planned nuclear-power phase-out, Handelsblatt said, citing a document it obtained.

MEPs call for mandatory register of Brussels lobbyists

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - A European Parliament committee on Tuesday (1 April) called for a mandatory register of the estimated 15-20,000 lobbyists in Brussels that wander the halls of the European institutions aiming to influence legislation.

In a significant victory for campaigners for transparency in public institutions, a report approved by the parliament's constitutional affairs committee recommends that 'interest representatives' – commonly known as lobbyists – be forced to be listed in a joint register covering the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council – where member states are represented.

Siemens sees impact from Finnish plant delay

FRANKFURT, March 31 (Reuters) - German engineering group Siemens expects a "not insignificant" financial impact from delays in completing a nuclear power plant in Finland, a German daily reported on Monday.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung quoted a Siemens spokesman as saying: "That is certainly aggravating."

Britain seeks loophole in EU green energy targets

Britain is seeking to change the rules governing renewable energy targets to make it easier for the UK to fulfil its commitment to promote clean energy, the Guardian has learned.

At present, only 3% of the UK's power comes from renewable energy, but ministers have agreed to increase this fivefold within 12 years. To help reach this goal, the government has started lobbying the EU over the way the target is calculated.

France and UK to step up nuclear co-operation

A two-day bilateral summit is to culminate today (27 March) with the signing of a new accord that will see France help the UK develop a new generation of nuclear power stations.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown are to seal the agreement on Thursday at the Emirates Stadium in North London, the home of Arsenal football club.
