(ELTA) - Parliamentary committees of the Baltic states are going to search for common solutions in the electronic area and energy security fields. The defense committees meeting on Wednesday consider the projects related to the new nuclear power plant and the electricity links to be the most important topics of their forth meeting.

According to Algimantas Matulevicius, chairman of the parliamentary committee on national security and defense, agreement between the Baltic states on this issue is important, but before the new projects are finished Lithuania"s dependence on imported energy resources may increase for several years. "This issue is current for all three of the Baltic States, that is why we will try to achieve the support of Latvia and Estonia concerning the extension of the operation of the
second block of Ignalina nuclear power plant," Matulevicius said.

MPs will also discuss the role of the EU and NATO in the energy security area and the security of electronic resources. Estonian MPs will share experience in this area and the representatives of the Latvian committee will present aspects of the transference to professional army.

Opinions will be shared on the new NATO strategic concept and NATO air patrol mission in the Baltic states.

Moreover, a joint statement of the committees is going to be passed.

The annual meetings of the Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian parliamentary defense committees have been held since 2005.
