Insurance against nuclear damage regulated in Belarus

MINSK, 14 January (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko signed decree No.15 “On responsibility for nuclear damage” on 14 January, the press service of the head of state told BelTA.

The document creates a mechanism to ensure financial assurance for damage caused by an activity involving nuclear energy. The decree limits the liability for damage of the state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant to 150 special drawing rights per nuclear incident.

Public liability insurance has been chosen as a form of collateral for the responsibility of the company in charge of operating the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The decree stipulates how insurance companies will work to insure against the risks the operation of the Belarusian nuclear power plant may involve.

The Belarusian nuclear insurance pool will organize and run the insurance system. Its participants will be Belgosstrakh, Eximgarant of Belarus, and the Belarusian National Reinsurance Organization.

The decree also stipulates requirements for nuclear damage liability insurance contracts. The decree will allow Belarus to honor international commitments in the area of civil liability for nuclear damage. It will take care of financial guarantees of the protection of rights and legal interests of individuals and corporations, natural environments.
