France understands the feasibility of building a nuclear power plant in Belarus, French Ambassador Mireille Musso said at a news conference in Minsk on Monday.

She said that the matter was topical in the contest of effort to diversify energy supplies.

Ms. Musso recalled that in 2006, the embassy organized a trip for a Belarusian delegation to France where they met with managers of French nuclear giant Areva.

She said that the embassy may help establish closer contacts with the French company.

She said that the French authorities could be interested in cooperation with Belarus in nuclear safety within the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The ambassador expressed hope that the Belarusian authorities will take every measure to ensure that the plant will be safe.
