Norwegian environmental group Bellona fears that Gazprom will use nuclear power to provide electricity to the huge Shtokman gas-field project.

The NGO has sought action by Norway's foreign ministry to prevent Gazprom taking the nuclear route.

According to a report in the Norwegian newspaper, Aftenposten, Rosenergoatom, Russian state nuclear power company plans to upgrade a nuclear power plant on the Kola peninsula to provide power and has already begun construction of a floating nuclear power generation plant - the world's first - which is expected to be completed in 2008.

Head of Bellona Frederic Hauge said the Russian gas monopoly had confirmed its intention to use nuclear power for the Barents Sea development.

He told Norwegian media: "Norway must say that this is unacceptable.

"In my opinion, this is extremely serious. It must be completely unacceptable, both for StatoilHydro and the Norwegian state as main owner, to be part of such a project."
