More then thirty years of debate, and the controversy remains as polarised as ever. This website (to be fair - whose maintainer is anti-nuclear) collects news about nuclear power in Europe, sorted by nuclear power plant, type of power plant, country etc.

Areva applies to seek uranium in northern Finland
Monday, September 1, 2008HELSINKI, Sept 1 (Reuters) - France's Areva submitted a claim to the Finnish government on Monday to search for uranium in northern Finland, the company said.
Areva Resources Finland said in a statement the exclusive, 5-year exploration claim was for a 108 sq km (41.7 square miles) parcel of land lying mostly in the municipality of Ranua in Lapland, 750 km north of Helsinki.

Saturday, August 30, 2008MOSCOW. Aug 29 (Interfax) - Generating Unit No. 2 of the Balakovo Nuclear Power Plant has been reconnected into Russia's electricity grid after routine safety maintenance, Russia's nuclear power plants operator, Rosenergoatom, said in a press release.
All of the plant's four generating units are currently in operation.

Friday, August 29, 2008Belarus may launch the construction of a nuclear power plant in January 2009, First Vice-Premier Vladimir Semashko told a joint session of the Energy Ministry of Belarus.
“The construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant may be launched on January 1, 2009 or may be earlier,” he said. The cost of the construction may reach $5-6 billion. In 2009, the Government intends to allocate Br200 billion from the national budget to finance the construction works.

The August 3 incident at the Seibersdorf analytical lab, which occurred overnight and caused no injury, raised a stir in Austria, which hosts the IAEA but rejects nuclear energy itself as fundamentally dangerous.
Finnish Nuclear Agency Finds Some Flaws in Olkiluoto Safety
Friday, August 29, 2008Aug. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Finland's Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority said today the supervision and ''safety culture'' of welding at the Olkiluoto-3 nuclear plant did not meet all of its standards and must be improved.
The agency, known as STUK, demanded changes after inspecting the site and interviewing workers this week, according to a statement posted on its Web site. The regulator said it found no quality problems that threaten the durability of the welds.
Belgian radioactive leak worse than initially thought
Friday, August 29, 2008BRUSSELS (AFP) — Fresh tests carried out near a Belgian medical laboratory showed that a leak of radioactive iodine last weekend was worse than had initially been thought, authorities said late Thursday.
Samples of grass taken next to the National Institute for Radioactive Elements near the southern city of Charleroi had shown higher levels of radioactive iodine than the first tests, an interior ministry crisis group said here.

Friday, August 29, 2008Green campaigners have expressed concern that the Government's Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) is using the same lobbying consultancy as a firm that often bids for major nuclear decommissioning contracts.

Thursday, August 28, 2008PARIS (AFP) — French nuclear group Areva is facing a 50 percent rise to the cost of building the world's first next-generation pressurised water reactor in Finland, the business daily Les Echos reported Thursday.
The cost of constructing the plant at Olkiluoto has risen from three billion to 4.5 billion euros (6.7 billion dollars), the paper reported citing an unidentified source.
Areva to improve monitoring at Tricastin plant
Wednesday, August 27, 2008PARIS: French nuclear engineering giant Areva said Wednesday it will invest €20 million (US$29.2 million) to improve health and environmental monitoring at a reactor complex that has been the site of a series of recent safety incidents.
The investment will also be used to find a new storage place for nuclear waste held at a site near the Tricastin complex that Areva acquired from France's Atomic Energy Commission in 2006, Areva said.
