More then thirty years of debate, and the controversy remains as polarised as ever. This website (to be fair - whose maintainer is anti-nuclear) collects news about nuclear power in Europe, sorted by nuclear power plant, type of power plant, country etc.

By presenting different (media) angles on current nuclear issues, we hope to be able to cut out some spin, either pro or against, and to allow the reader to make up his or her own mind about today's pro's and con's of nuclear power.

The Associated Press, November 14, 2007 - CONSTANTA, Romania: A nuclear reactor in Romania automatically switched off Wednesday for the second time in a week, officials said.

There was no danger to workers or to people living near the Cernavoda nuclear plant in eastern Romania, National Nuclear Electric Co. spokeswoman Mihaela Stiopol said.

Sarkozy wants everyone to have nuclear power - French nuclear power

PARIS: Six months into his term, President Nicolas Sarkozy is aggressively pursuing a new policy to give Muslim countries access to nuclear power - and win lucrative contracts for France's energy champions in the process.

After signing a memorandum of understanding with Libya in the summer, Sarkozy struck a preliminary cooperation accord with Morocco last month. Diplomats say he is planning to discuss nuclear power during trips to Algeria in December and Saudi Arabia in January.

Lithuania's Ignalina nuclear plant shut down after emergency system triggered

VILNIUS, Lithuania (Thomson Financial) - Lithuania's Soviet-era Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) said its number two unit was shut down yesterday at 5.20 pm after a technical problem triggered the automatic protection system.

The plant, which uses the same reactors as Ukraine's Chernobyl plant, will remain offline for at least three days.

The Associated Press, November 7, 2007 - CONSTANTA, Romania: A nuclear reactor in Romania automatically switched off Wednesday, after it began to produce radioactive material, officials said.

There was no danger to workers or to people living near the Cernavoda nuclear plant in eastern Romania, National Nuclear Electric Company spokeswoman Mihaela Stiopol said, adding that the environment also was not threatened.

Albanian Nuclear Power Plant Prospect Alarms Greek Public - Paper

The prospect of a nuclear power station being built in Albania has alarmed the Greeks, who already are surrounded or expect to be surrounded by nuclear power stations in neighbouring countries.

Under the heading 'Albania Plans to Build a Nuclear Station', the daily To Ethnos is, after Eleutherotypia, another Greek newspaper that has in the past 10 days published various reactions to the plans to build, in Albania, a nuclear power station that is expected to solve its energy problems. It was the Athens News Agency [ANA] that announced two weeks ago that Albania intends to build a nuclear power station, citing a statement by Albanian Prime Minister Berisha to the effect that "there is an offer from a French company to build a nuclear power station in Durres." According to the Greek media, a Swedish and a US company have also made offers to this effect.

MOSCOW, November 6 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia and China have agreed to start joint action to build a gas centrifuge plant in Chinese territory to enrich uranium for the nuclear power industry.

The chief of Russia’s atomic energy industry Sergei Kiriyenko and chairman of China’s Defense Science, Technology and Industry committee, Zhang Qinwei, signed a protocol to the corresponding agreement of December 18 1992 within the framework of the twelfth regular meeting of Russian and Chinese prime ministers on Tuesday.

Latvia, Russia to conclude nuclear deal

RIGA -- The Latvian government has endorsed an agreement to send used nuclear fuel from the decommissioned Salaspils nuclear research facility to Russia.

The Environment Ministry proposal was given the green light at a government meeting on Nov. 6, meaning that a full agreement with russia can go ahead next week.
