More then thirty years of debate, and the controversy remains as polarised as ever. This website (to be fair - whose maintainer is anti-nuclear) collects news about nuclear power in Europe, sorted by nuclear power plant, type of power plant, country etc.

By presenting different (media) angles on current nuclear issues, we hope to be able to cut out some spin, either pro or against, and to allow the reader to make up his or her own mind about today's pro's and con's of nuclear power.

Tunisia and France sign accords on civilian nuclear cooperation, immigration

France and Tunisia signed accords on nuclear cooperation and immigration on Monday, the first day of French President Nicolas Sarkozy's state visit to the North African nation.

The accords were the first in a spate of deals — including a Tunisian airline's possible purchase of more than a dozen Airbus aircraft — aimed at strengthening economic and political ties between France and its former protectorate.

Russia plans nuclear plant for Kaliningrad exclave

VILNIUS - An announcement by Moscow that it intended to build two nuclear reactors in the Kaliningrad region triggered dismay and alarm in neighboring Lithuania, which is struggling to get plans for its own atomic power plant off the ground.

Sergey Kiriyenko, head of the Rosatom nuclear energy agency, announced on April 16 that Russia would build two reactors with a combined 2,300 megawatts output in the region of Kaliningrad. He signed a framework agreement together with Kaliningrad Governor Georgy Boos.

Turkey's First Nuclear Power Plant To Be Inaugurated In 2015

GAZIANTEP - Turkey`s first nuclear power plant would probably be inaugurated in 2015, head of Turkish Electricity Trading Co. (TETAS) said on Tuesday.

Haci Duran Gokkaya, director general of TETAS, told the A.A correspondent that legal ground is already ready to produce nuclear energy in Turkey and the tender process --which started on March 24th, 2008-- would end on September 24th, 2008.

Lukashenka lambastes critics of nuclear plant project

Alyaksandr Lukashenka has attacked critics of the government’s plans to build a nuclear power plant in Belarus, describing them as “enemies of the people”, BelaPAN reports.

While talking to reporters in the Homyel region on April 26, the 22nd anniversary of the Chernobyl accident, Mr. Lukashenka described scientists who oppose the project as “gangsters from politics” and accused opposition politicians of capitalizing on the subject for political gain. “They won’t manage to do this. I will not allow them to do this, using all resources and all power that I have in my hands today,” official information sources quoted him as saying.

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. On Monday, April 28, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) central office is to discuss the issue of nuclear reactor in Azerbaijan.

Adil Garibov, the director of the Institute of Radiation Problems, said that during the meeting the experts will come to single opinion on reactor construction.

Russia wants to sign nuclear fuel contract with Ukraine in 2008

MOSCOW, April 28 (RIA Novosti) - Russia plans to complete talks on a new contract for nuclear fuel supplies to Ukraine for 2010-2025 later this year, Russia's deputy nuclear chief said on Monday.

Russia will supply all nuclear fuel for Ukrainian power plants until the end of 2010.

Energy Solutions and Toshiba-Westinghouse consortium nuclear bid

An American-Japanese consortium is bidding to construct two new nuclear power stations at sites in Gloucestershire and Essex as the race to build a new generation of reactors intensifies.

Energy Solutions, a nuclear services firm based in Salt Lake City, Utah, is working on the plans with Toshiba-Westinghouse, a supplier of reactor technology. They are already collaborating on a proposed new nuclear station at Wylfa in Anglesey, North Wales.

UK nuclear power revival at risk of delays

Pensioned-off engineers will have to be brought out of retirement if the revival of nuclear power is not to be hit by serious delays, the Government has been warned.

A shortage of professional engineers and skilled trades is threatening plans to build new nuclear power stations around the country to ensure security of electricity supply and avoid the risk of blackouts, it is claimed.

Doomed Chernobyl reactor to be buried in giant steel coffin

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Twenty-two years after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, work is under way on a colossal new shelter to cover the ruins and deadly radioactive contents of the exploded Soviet-era power plant.

For years, the original iron and concrete shelter that was hastily constructed over the reactor has been leaking radiation, cracking and threatening to collapse. The new one, an arch of steel, would be big enough to contain the Statue of Liberty.

Power plants face insurance hike

Nuclear power plant operators in the Czech Republic are facing a huge and unexpected increase in insurance costs, following a government decision to raise the amount of liability for damage compensation from 6 billion Kč ($384.9 million) to 8 billion Kč.

In March, the government issued a statement instructing the Industry and Trade Ministry to work with the Environment Ministry to implement the increase by preparing a ratification of the protocol to the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage.
