Tuesday, April 29, 2008France and Tunisia signed accords on nuclear cooperation and immigration on Monday, the first day of French President Nicolas Sarkozy's state visit to the North African nation.
The accords were the first in a spate of deals — including a Tunisian airline's possible purchase of more than a dozen Airbus aircraft — aimed at strengthening economic and political ties between France and its former protectorate.
Russia plans nuclear plant for Kaliningrad exclave
Monday, April 28, 2008VILNIUS - An announcement by Moscow that it intended to build two nuclear reactors in the Kaliningrad region triggered dismay and alarm in neighboring Lithuania, which is struggling to get plans for its own atomic power plant off the ground.
Sergey Kiriyenko, head of the Rosatom nuclear energy agency, announced on April 16 that Russia would build two reactors with a combined 2,300 megawatts output in the region of Kaliningrad. He signed a framework agreement together with Kaliningrad Governor Georgy Boos.

Haci Duran Gokkaya, director general of TETAS, told the A.A correspondent that legal ground is already ready to produce nuclear energy in Turkey and the tender process --which started on March 24th, 2008-- would end on September 24th, 2008.
Lukashenka lambastes critics of nuclear plant project
Monday, April 28, 2008Alyaksandr Lukashenka has attacked critics of the government’s plans to build a nuclear power plant in Belarus, describing them as “enemies of the people”, BelaPAN reports.
While talking to reporters in the Homyel region on April 26, the 22nd anniversary of the Chernobyl accident, Mr. Lukashenka described scientists who oppose the project as “gangsters from politics” and accused opposition politicians of capitalizing on the subject for political gain. “They won’t manage to do this. I will not allow them to do this, using all resources and all power that I have in my hands today,” official information sources quoted him as saying.

For years, the original iron and concrete shelter that was hastily constructed over the reactor has been leaking radiation, cracking and threatening to collapse. The new one, an arch of steel, would be big enough to contain the Statue of Liberty.
Power plants face insurance hike
Monday, April 28, 2008Nuclear power plant operators in the Czech Republic are facing a huge and unexpected increase in insurance costs, following a government decision to raise the amount of liability for damage compensation from 6 billion Kč ($384.9 million) to 8 billion Kč.
In March, the government issued a statement instructing the Industry and Trade Ministry to work with the Environment Ministry to implement the increase by preparing a ratification of the protocol to the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage.
