UNIT SCRAM CAUSED BY GRID DISTURBANCES DUE TO TORNADO

The unit was operating at 350 MWe power level. As a result of tornado the 330 kV, 154 kV and 110 kV transmission lines of the "Kolenergo" power system were damaged. At 02:29 TG-6 was tripped by emergency protection. As a result of strong frequency oscillations in the system (from 44 to 52.5 Hz) TG 5 was disconnected from the grid at 04:11 and Unit 3 was scrammed by AZ1 protection. All safety system (SS) components started as designed except the auxiliary motor-driven feedwater pump (AFP-1) which was started directly from its subdistribution bus. At 04:47 due to loss of voltage in the 330 kV grid the normal buses were deenergized. Cooling water and main condensate pumps tripped. By that time all SSs were in service.
At 05:00 the power was supplied through the L-148 transmission line from the Niva-1 hydropower station to the 1TR standby transformer which enabled to transfer the power to essential loads from DGs to 1TR transformer.
At 06:15 the L-148 line tripped due to external impacts. As a result of loss of power to 1TR transformer the normal buses got deenergized and the "total loss of unit power" signal was formed. Meanwhile essential buses had already been fed from DGs and all SS components were in operation. At 07:40 the normal buses were connected to the 2TR transformer. At 08:40 the 330 kV open switchgear was energized under the normal configuration.
