Shutdown of Cruas unit 4 after heat sink incident

During the night of 1 to 2 December 2009, a massive inflow of debris carried along by the Rhône river after an heavy rain, has clogged the heat sink filters and drains of the Cruas NPP unit 4. This situation has led to the loss of the ultimate heat sink. At 11:50 pm, the French operator EDF triggered the on-site emergency plan of the Cruas NPP to manage this event.

The unit 4, located upstream of the site is the most exposed to such external hazards. The heat sinks of the three other reactors of the Cruas NPP have remained operational.

This event is taken into account into the NPP safety procedures and the reactor has been shutdown in conformance with them.

On 2 December 2009 morning, the unit 4 heat sink was re-established and the on-site emergency plan put off. EDF has implemented satisfactorily several dispositions to unplug the heat sink filters and drains and to monitor the reactor cooling water supply in case of the arrival of new clogging debris from the Rhône river.
